The 10 Most Educational Lessons You Can Learn By Watching Anime !

Here are my 10 reasons why Anime has educational value. No matter what type of Anime you’re into!

1. Anime teaches you the importance of hard work

Think of Anime shows like Dragon Ball Z.
From the moment you set eyes on Goku in the first Dragon Ball series, he does nothing but train to become stronger, faster, smarter, better.
And one point that’s important is: None of it comes easy to Goku.
Goku’s such a great example of where persistence can take you, and why it’s important to work hard to get the results you want.
There are even motivational Anime videos based off of DBZ, all because of how influenced fans are by the life lessons set by Goku in DBZ.
As well as other DBZ characters.
If I were to use another example, it would be Saitama from One Punch Man.
Sure it’s a parody show, but the same lessons still apply.
He worked hard, didn’t take any shortcuts, and put in the work to end up as strong as he’s become in One Punch Man.
It’s this simple concept that’s easy to ignore (because it’s an Anime), and yet is true for life in general.
Hard work beats cheating or trying to take shortcuts every time. Especially in the long run.

2. Helps you understand different types of people

Kantai Collection anime characters.

Slice of Life Anime shows are great for this. Because they show and teach you how people are, how their minds work, and what makes them tick.
It’s the perfect example of human psychology and how we react or deal with certain situations in life.
By understanding how people work, and understanding different types of people, you become smarter and more knowledgeable.
And also, your perspective changes because the more people you know, the more the way you see things changes.
And then how you judge people and certain situations will also change.
And even help you in some way or another.

3. You can learn a lot about Japan just by watching

Top 6 Anime about Japanese Culture - Yona Schuh Postcards from Japan

I’m not foolish enough to say watching Anime will teach you everything about Japan.
Or that everything shown in Anime reflects how Japan is or looks.
I know that. You should know that, too.
But by watching Anime you can learn quite a lot about Japanese culture.
Like:
  • Foods.
  • Traditions.
  • Dress codes.
  • How their streets/towns are laid out.
  • Cost of goods.
  • Shrine Maidens.
  • How they celebrate.
And so many more things.
It all depends on the type of Anime you watch, as not every Anime show is a good example of what Japan is like.
But there is some educational value in a lot of Anime shows about how Japan is.
Both old and new.

4. Lessons on self confidence

Arrogance vs. Confidence, Self-deprecation vs. Humility ...

Some of us are lacking in self confidence, and are afraid to do the things we want.
I get that. I too struggled with self confidence issues, bullying and stuff like that.
The great thing about Anime is – a lot of shows are relatable and realistic
With characters who struggle with self confidence issues, and manage to overcome them
Just by watching these types of Anime shows you’ll learn plenty of self confidence lessons.
And how to go about building your own confidence or overcoming your confidence issues.
Good examples of Anime shows like this:
  • Bleach.
  • Barakamon.
  • And you never thought there was a girl online?
  • Assassination Classroom.
  • The Ultimate Otaku Teacher.
  • Dragon Ball Z.
  • Best Student Council.
  • Love Live School Idol Project.
And so much more.
Sometimes the lessons are subtle and hard to see.
But if you pay attention, more Anime shows than you’re aware of will teach you some great lessons on self confidence.

5. Learning new words and terms

A good example of this is the word – Synesthesia.
Which is basically when one part of your body is able to stimulate another part of your body.
I learned this by watching the Anime – A Certain Scientific Railgun.
The word was quoted (and explained) by Mikoto Misaka.
Another thing I learned by watching Anime is – what Narcolepsy is.
It’s a condition that causes you to fall asleep when you feel relaxed and at ease.
I learned this by watching the slice of life Anime – Little Busters.
There’s a lot of educational value in learning new words and growing your mental dictionary!

6. Personal growth

In the Anime show – BarakamonSeishuu Handa punches his director after Handa’s Calligraphy work is criticized.
Afterwards he’s sent to live on an island far away from Tokyo to change his behavior and rid of his anger issues.
As you watch the Anime you see a guy who was once too angry and emotional for his own good, become a completely different person through personal growth.
It’s inspiring to watch, as well as fun and will even make you think.
It’s these types of Anime shows that can teach you the power of personal growth and improving yourself.
There’s tons of educational value in that!

7. How to deal with hardships

Here are a couple of Anime’s that teach you how to deal with hardships:
  • D.Gray Man.
  • Bleach.
  • Kokoro Connect.
  • Gunslinger Girl.
  • Slayers.
  • Clannad.
  • Scrapped Princess.
  • Claymore.
  • Sunday Without God.
No matter what you do, life will give you hardships to deal with.
And we all have the choice to face those hardships and do our best to overcome them.
Or give up and accept defeat.
Lots of Anime shows have educational value when it comes to hardships, dealing with life, and learning how to overcome the obstacles we face.
And that in itself is priceless. No school can teach you that.

8. The importance of planning and strategy

Anime shows that teach you about planning and strategy:

  • Code Geass.
  • The One Being Sung.
  • Oda Nobuna.
  • The Asterisk War.
  • Guilty Crown.
  • Danganronpa.
  • Amagi Brilliant Park.
  • Assassination Classroom.
  • Akame Ga Kill.
  • Pokemon.
If you don’t plan or strategize, then your results will end up sloppy and unpolished.
If I were to choose one Anime to watch for planning or strategy, it would be Code Geass or Assassination Classroom.
There’s so much educational value in this because without it, you won’t be clear on anything you do.
And that’s for life in general.

9. How to laugh and not take yourself too seriously

The Amazing Spiez

Comedy Anime shows are one of the best examples of this.
Here are a few characters who do this well:
  • Hikari Takanashi.
  • Yui Hirasawa.
  • Tsumugi Kotobuki.
  • Saori Takabe.
  • Goku.
  • Bulat.
  • Natsumi Tsujimoto.
Why does this have educational value?
  • It helps you defeat stress.
  • It helps you focus on what’s important.
  • It keeps you focused on the positive, rather than negative 24/7.
  • It helps you become a happier, more positive person.
  • And also makes you more likable and clear minded.
Every year kids, teenagers and adults stress themselves out over exams and GCSE’S.
If you learn how to tone down the stress, your results will always be better.
And that’s true for anything that you do in life.
You can’t drive a car with a stressed mind for example.
You won’t be focused on the road if that’s the case.
So there’s a lot of educational value with comedy Anime shows (and Anime’s in general).

10. Economics and Business

This world revolves around money, no matter where you go or what you plan to do.
Though not taught in school (even though it should), economics is one of the most important topics in the world.
The educational value for it is obvious
And there are Anime shows that are based around economics, business, or at least have some educational value with both topics.
Examples of Anime shows that can teach you about economics or business:
  • Spice and Wolf.
  • Nabiki Tendo from Ranma ½.
  • Best Student Council.
  • Amagi Brilliant Park.
  • Log Horizon.

Conclusion:

“Education” is a word most associate with school, college, degrees, academics, etc.
But education is anything that can teach you something.
Anime has lots to offer when it comes to teaching you something new, different, helpful or even academic.
It all depends on what you watch, and what you’re interested in!
